Much of my recent mixed media work explores the impetus for action after a metaphorical “stripping away” of meaning and context. It is an exploration of action for action’s sake. The first step in the process is often the removal of mass-produced reproductions from fiberboard panels. Once the reproductions are stripped away, there is a period of experimentation as I attempt to establish some sort of ground. At this point my actions are somewhat random or experimental (What if I do this? What color should I start with?), and it often requires a buildup of random actions before the piece begins to suggest a direction. From there I search through my collection of odds and ends (discarded library books, found papers and objects, remnants of other works) looking for something that adds coherence to the piece. Sometimes I’m lucky, and the memory of something I’ve seen, perhaps almost used before, surfaces in my mind suggesting a direction. ![]() Neither of the two will ever, mixed media, 16 x 24
